Welcome to Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city. Located on the Lilongwe River it is your typical East African city with scenic landscape, wonderful weather, high presence of wildlife and amazing people.
Lilongwe is divided into two parts, the New Town and the Old Town occupying the northern and southern areas of the city respectively. The New Town might seem more appealing cause of its name but the Old Town is the more exciting for visitors and where most of the city’s best attraction lie.
From the Kamuzu Mausoleum to the Lilongwe Wildlife Center, Lilongwe is a great place to see and enjoy.

Kamuzu Mausoleum
The Kamuzu Mausoleum is resting place of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the first prime minister and later president of Malawi often referred to as Malawi’s “President for life”. The mausoleum made of granite and marble is at the center of four pillars each inscribed with the initials of his top principles – discipline, loyalty, obedience and unity. It also contains a research center and a library, the total cost of building the mausoleum was $600,000.

Tobacco Auction Floors
Malawi is one of the top producers of Tobacco in the world and there are often tobacco auctions held in large warehouses during the months of May to September. Visit the Auction Holding warehouse located north of Lilongwe city center to experience the bidding wars, they are quick paced and might seem overwhelming at first but become very exciting when you understand the process.

Parliament Building
One of Malawi’s most visited places is the Parliament Building, this is where all the major decisions affecting the country takes place. The large and beautiful structure was built by the Chinese government as a gift to Malawians. Visiting the building and admiring of its outer decor and fascinating structure is allowed, but like most government houses entrance without an official invitation is not permitted. Visitors are advised to apply for a free guided tour at the gate.

Lilongwe Wildlife Center
Established as a sanctuary for rescued and orphaned animals, the center’s major aim is the conservation of Malawi’s wildlife. The Lilongwe Wildlife Center covers an area of 1.1 square kilometers and it has a mixture of flora and fauna, containing about 200 animals including lions, crocodiles, hyenas and monkeys. Asides the flora and fauna presence, it is a good place for hiking, picnics and relaxing. There is also a bar, Café and Moonlight Cinema at the center.

Lilongwe Craft Market
The craft market located right beside the city’s post office is the busiest part of the city, it is a center for art and culture - a place that really embodies the true spirit of the Malawian people. The Market is one of the biggest in the country and has vendors from all over the countries selling a variety of items, if you are seeking for a place to buy some souvenirs and artifacts this is the place. Some items sold include jewelry, bags, shoes, sculptures and even traditional chairs.
